Kortmar DC Dakota WTD

'Dakota'

On Anzac weekend 2009, we sadly had to say goodbye to Dakota, the big man.

If sheer determination and strength is what you look for in a dog, then Dakota was what you would have wanted.  An awesome runner who had a turbo switch when needed and the brains to be a great leader.

Dakota and his litter sister Aspen, were a remarkable team.  The big boy, 30 inches at the withers, had fantastic conformation for harness work and he proved this time and time again.  Even at 7 years of age, his average speed was 27 1/2 km's per hour.  Not bad for a 50kg dog at an age when most other Malamutes would have been retired.

Dakota sired a lovely litter of 7 puppies in 1999.  6 girls and 1 boy who are all gorgeous black and white stunners!

He was awarded his WTD (Working Team Dog) from the AMCNSW.

Dakota just missed out on his 13th birthday but what a life he led!  The number of races he went to and the people he endeared to him - he's done a great job to promote not only his breed in sleddog sports in this country but also Idigadog's reputation.

We are still quite raw about his passing and the tears still come quite freely.  We miss him terribly and he has left a major hole not only in our hearts, but in our kennel. 

Run free big fella, reunited once again with your sister Aspen.

The old boy felt his worn and tired muscles relax and his pain dissolve.

He drew in a long, soft breath and relaxed a little more as the familiar, loving scent of his people, filled his lungs. Memories of them rushed through his brain and warmed his heart.

"A collage of happy images and tender days."

He felt their soft touches against his fur. Their hands sent a tactile message of their gratitude and their love. He felt the warmth atop his head and neck and blinked and saw their faces streaked with tears.

"Don't cry for me or feel sad."

He heard them as he shut his eyes. They said his name and the "good boy" words, through their pain and sorrow. In his mind, his tail wagged to tell them that he heard. And understood.

"Good bye, my Hearts."

He is standing in a meadow, near a stream. The sky is fiercely blue. He hears the song of many birds and smells the growing grass. His legs are strong. His eyes are clear. He begins to walk toward a brightly colored bridge, far off on the horizon, but pauses for a moment and looks back.

"Thank you. Until the day we walk together once again."

He turns and wags his thick strong tail and runs. And runs.
